🔹 The Surprise Stat: Since late 2022 (right around when ChatGPT exploded), early-career workers (ages 22-25) in high-AI-exposure jobs have seen a 13% relative drop in employment. That’s after accounting for company ups and downs. Meanwhile, jobs for seasoned pros in the same fields? They’re holding steady or even growing!
🔹 Who’s Feeling the Pinch? Young talent in roles like software developers, customer service reps, accountants, and receptionists – tasks ripe for AI automation. But hey, if AI’s augmenting work (think helping registered nurses, repair workers, or even CEOs), we’re actually seeing job growth there.
🔹 Why the Young Guns? AI nails the “book smarts” stuff, but it can’t touch that hands-on, tacit knowledge you build over years. Older workers’ experience? Priceless and irreplaceable. No wonder entry-level gigs are stalling while overall employment ticks up.
🔹 The Flip Side: In-person jobs? Safe for now – think repair workers, cleaners, taxi drivers, and laborers. And salaries? No big dips yet across ages; cuts are hitting headcounts first.
This lines up eerily with a recent @Microsoft study pointing the finger at customer service and admin roles. Remember, tech giants like @Cisco and @Intuit have blamed restructurings on AI, and even @Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei warns half of entry-level jobs could vanish in five years.
But it’s not all doom – the study hints at growth where AI boosts humans, not replaces ’em. As an AI expert, I’ve seen this play out in real estate: Tools automating admin free up agents for client magic. Yet, as a Midwesterner, I worry about our young grads facing tougher starts.
